About The Types

Your TO8 Type

Your TO8 type is taken from the time and latitude of your birth according to evolutionary principles discussed in Andrew Kennedy's  Essential Personalities, and why humans found love, adapted to monogamy and became better parents (2009)

About the book: Astrology for grown-ups?  During conversations with two women his life this author tries to nail down a form of personality typing that marries principles of human evolution with personality fundamentals predicted by the time of year of birth.

The book contains descriptions of all the personality types he believes can be identified, and how to find out what type a person is.  More important than all the science, the author writes convincingly about the hows and whys of making relationships and how you can find your best partner (it's not what you think). For anyone wanting some kind of clue as to who is going to be good for them and why, then read this well-researched and wide-ranging book. You may find yourself looking at birth dates in a different way, and thinking some strange thoughts about what human society is all about. Men are not from Mars, nor women from Venus, they both come from the same planet, Earth, and they are a lot more similar than the rumours have it.More profiles and discussions will be posted from time to time.

All the types presented here are taken from this book.  An ebook version is available for download from Kobo Books at this link: http://bit.ly/V0uexj (app readers check out web link at bottom of this page)
---------------------------------------------
The author has identified 64 personality types. A person has one of 8 Majors and one of 8 Minors. Each overal type is described here. What type you are depends upon the latitude of your birth.

To find precisely which combination of Major and Minor you are you will need your birth day, and you will need to know  which hemisphere  you were born in and whether you were  born in the tropics.  The calendar varies over the leap year cycle.

(The hour of your birth is only needed if you are born very near the transition of one type to another.  If you are born on a day of the year when there is a transition and you don't know the hour you were born, consider that most people are born in the early morning. If the hour of the change between types is around the middle of the day then read both types to try and decide which one you may be. Recorded birth times are not necessarily very accurate, so even if you do know the time of your birth, and it is close to the transition, then read both types.)

Then click on this link to go on-line to the TO8 calendar to find your type or 8-traits for a birthday anywhere in the world.

You can find more precise details of your Major and Minor combination in the above book which describes the discovery of these types and ponders its meaning for the future evolution of society.

The Minor Sevens

Everyday Themes in the Minor Seven

Minor Sevens are expressive, enthusiastic, likely to be quietly amused by the odd and outlandish, never far from outbursts of passion or anger (usually directed at the selfish or parsimonious). In general they seem charming and poised, though in their early years, they tend to have no preferred direction in life or even a sense of identity, and may live rashly and for excitement. Others may perceive them as unpredictable and wayward, though somewhat unflappable. The stresses they react to are deeper than the transient worries of everyday life. The Minor 7 gives vision to the Major and an ability to express itself.
As a fertile Minor, 7 protects the Major from being easily damaged by events, although it can also distract the individual and squander potential. Those with the Minor 7 are usually slower to react than you might expect, holding back a response as they think beyond the moment, and looking for a more long-lasting path. So too, they may have inertia to them and remain in a state that others might call complacent. But they will borrow where they need to and use any tool to get moving along road to a solution when it finally becomes necessary. They move, however well disguised their actions, step by planned step. Minor Sevens can be dissemblers, throwing up a smoke screen of humour and distraction while beneath they get on with the issues important to them.
Minor Sevens will retain many features of youth and childhood into adult life. As children they will create, or delight in hearing and reading about, fantasy worlds. Immersion in these dream worlds will give them great pleasure, and act as rehearsals for real life. They imitate adult behaviour without really knowing what it lies behind it, and think they are ready for the adult world early in life. Having finally reached this long desired state, they may find its responsibilities boring and inappropriate. They may try to avoid taking up obligations with the excuse that they do not fully understand them.
In their youth, Minor Sevens can have a Svengali-type influence on younger and more innocent members of their circle, but as they grow older they may have many and deep crushes and be drawn to form relationships with older, Svengali-type figures themselves. Or they can become passionate fans. They easily pick up interesting elements from other people's lifestyles, and they may have heroes, most likely from the past, that they will defend with fervour, and who might help determine the Minor Seven's ambitions. Their choice of further study will probably be influenced by individuals they admire, possibly their parents. They act as if protected by some greater power, and seem to be able to get away with escapades.
Minor Sevens like to keep good, long friendships: the type of friendship that can be picked up again after any gap, an underlying bond that just is. They search for depth of understanding in a good friendship, but may be deceived by superficial familiarity in an acquaintance. They are believers, and are less taken in by clever deceptions than self-deceiving.
A Major with a The Minor 7 can readily express sentimentality to dominate a situation. Minor Sevens often react to situations with sentiment in order to avoid making decisions when they feel the tide of events should be doing it and they may panic when a task seems to be coming to an end. They feel exposed, and cannot help wondering if this was the end they really wanted. Minor Sevens try to defuse stressful situations with humour, if they cannot walk away. They do not like to battle on other people's turf and according to other people's rules. Minor Sevens think of themselves as affected by luck or destiny and like to gamble on their good intuitions, which may benefit or, just as easily, threaten the success of their work.

7 describes a broad unfocussed potential, far from the Landscape, and its Minor shapes its mode of expression even more than it does for Threes. 7 is like a charged circuit that needs its switch to be thrown. On the axis of expression (7-3), they can produce plenty of energy when they have a project to apply it to, though their energy is more liable to get squandered in short-term distractions. Of all the signs, the Major Seven is most qualified by its Minor. Combined with other fertile signs, Sevens can be delightfully expressive in a wide variety of non-combative ways, and in combination with Landscape signs they can be tireless toilers in the vineyard, appearing to have buoyancy in events that keeps them from being overwhelmed by them. Beneath their casual exterior, Sevens are playing the long game.

Like other fertile signs, Sevens are resilient and have immense reserves of mental energy, often getting away with little sleep. Sevens are willing to accept rather than manipulate, which means that they tend to be less implicated or reliant on one particular thing or person. For Sevens, the more things change the more they stay the same. They often seem callous and insensitive to the individual pains of others, but they see far down the road to where the sweep of history is (hopefully) taking them. Set beside that, the individual and his or her problems is small beer.

Sevens accept people as they are. They enjoy individuality, see people as unchangeable and treat them on that basis. They consider events in the world on a similar basis and take the rough with the smooth, while expecting that the tide of affairs will always turn in their favour. They need a flow of events in which to operate, and so they have little discrimination, taking whatever opportunity they chance upon to act rather than do nothing. Even their own past is something rather vague to them, since events tend to replace or overwrite previous ones in memory rather than lie sequentially beside them. Sevens are more interested in where life is taking them than in where they used to be and thus the present is always a springboard to other things. They take (or readily accept) abrupt changes in direction from time to time without qualms. They strongly identify with history in the making and their individual career paths will always try to align with the larger forces of the moment. They are happy, therefore, to allow precedent rather than calculation to make decisions, and they are at ease with the unavoidable repetitions of social reality and the familiar demands of the human conscience. They can readily see into the 'laws' of action.

Sevens are amused and amusing, and can think generously towards the people around them, although they have few qualms about sacrificing someone to the general good. They are attractive to others and seem to be multifaceted characters, though their potential for anger may be missed. They have a sense of 'brotherhood' (as opposed to the sense of 'humanity' of Sixes) with fellow humans, and for friendships in general, and are not critical or overtly controlling of what is happening around them; accepting and enjoying people and events for what they are. They see the world as shining with possibilities, all appealing in one way or another. Sevens can play-act many roles, especially the court-jester. The other side of the coin of happiness, however, is unhappiness with life's progression, or lack of it. Sevens are sensitive to being 'washed up' or deserted by the flow of events, and this awareness may inspire their creativity. When held back from moving forward, they readily fall into ruts of behaviour and straightjackets of opinion, before their anger emerges; when it does, it is to exclude those who do not make the grade or who do not belong (to them).
They are less shockable than most, and they could make good social and health-care workers. We are likely to find Sevens involved in music, mathematics and art than in other occupations since they can sense the inner harmony of events, large and small. They may end up in the prediction 'sciences' or in the world of finance where a real-time 'feel' for cycles and markets can be exploited, although they are not natural investors and may have little interest in calculating investment returns. What they look for is the hidden quality that others may miss, best described as the 'good bet'.

Sevens like nothing more than to be welcomed onto the Landscape and to enjoy the initiations of new communities. But they can easily drift into the shadows where stranger circumstances may direct their lives. When they are successful, Sevens are very successful, bringing admiration from all sides, but when they have not yet found their way, they can be tangled in unenviable situations. Sevens have the confidence that comes from being a 'source', and who can remain blissfully unaware and unharmed by the consequences that he or she makes in their personal acts. For the same reason, Sevens may be missing out on key moments and events that could change their lives by this lack of attention to the tracks that they make in the world.

Sevens are interested in everything but tend to prefer the interesting and exploitable avenues of adventure that chance throws up. They choose the path in the maze that opens up before them hoping it will eventually take them towards the paths being carved out and where the decisions are being made. They know where they are going; the actual route may not matter, and they may stagnate in the same job or lifestyle for years before suddenly something crops up and a new door opens a pathway to where they want to be. They often see the help they get from others as their due. For the same reason, they can accept what the fates dish out uncomplainingly.

Sevens take the long view. While their indolence may appear self-absorbed, they understand the undercurrents of life, and use this knowledge to make direct, intuitive contact with the events above ground, as it were. They are more likely than Threes (at the opposite end of the expression axis) to believe that the everyday social reality only partially reflects the underlying patterns of life, and they think, therefore, that profound knowledge can change the everyday world. For Sevens, knowledge is a source of power or even good
In work, Sevens depend upon the Landscape Minors to help apply themselves, otherwise can be slow and reticent about using their skills to the utmost. They need surprises to stretch them. They are able learners of music, song and the performance arts, and can gain a great deal of pleasure from repeating performances, finding profound meanings in repeat performances, though it may take a lot to raise their performances from the perfunctory. They may let their skills slide, however, for want of practice, and unrealised goals can leave them wandering lost in the maze, set adrift from practical life. They do not feel what they do is reckless and they trust in the Fates, and they are more ready to paint the Fates in a favourable light even when trapped or restricted by losses due to them. Although they can be superstitious about what they do, when sensitive to unpleasant influences on their work, they take risks in order to bridge gaps, to make connections.

Sevens have an eye for the supra-real and for events or motifs that are not superficial or momentary, and will hunt around for something pleasurable and amusing in every situation. They are full of optimism, in spite of the disappointments that their expectations give them. They turn to family life eventually and are happy to devote themselves to raising a family in imaginative and loving ways.

The Minor Sixes

Everyday Themes in the Minor Six

Although Minor Sixes have a serious tone and a critical outlook, looking for ways to differentiate themselves from the group, they like to joke, especially in caricature and especially in ways that attack muddle and confusion. They feel anxious about complacent social harmony and balance, and like to tip self-satisfaction over the edge. Minor Sixes feel tension in partnerships and work environments because they identify themselves more strongly with the aims of the project they are involved in than with the group. 6 is off the landscape of social reality, and Minor Sixes can easily lack an everyday charm, worldliness and social ease. In spite of being prepared to take on the burdens of others and to feel responsible for them, Minor Sixes dislike complex social situations and don't take naturally to gangs, close peer groups or group ethics unless they are the star or opinion maker. They tend to think that accepted standards in society are feeble compromises and they do not feel bound to keep them even if they cannot escape them.
They are keen to join in with group play, but may miss out on the feeling of belonging happily to a united set of friends. Minor Sixes want to play, but to play out games that can reveal their critical sense rather than ones that relish organised roles and teamwork. To most other children the games of Minor Sixes may seem too serious and hardly games. For most children, play is about socialising, testing the means and limits of social interaction; for Minor Sixes, play is about probing minds, and comparing the range of their own knowledge.
Minor Sixes look for praise and re-assurance even in simple bland everyday situations, fearing being seen to be wrong. Minor Sixes are self-conscious of their own abilities and they like to quietly measure their successes against those of the group. Minor Sixes expect most people to be as analytical as they are, and are often disappointed when others don't show their same love of knowledge display and of problem solving that require deep concentration, or even a decent analysis of a puzzle. They are impressed by those who are masters of their intellectual powers, and are drawn to the art of free spirits and self-contained thinkers.
Minor Sixes are sensitive to the feeling of being a stranger in a strange land and cannot avoid feeling critical of those around them. They can recognise other outsiders and side with them against the masses. Minor Sixes are interested, politically, in the idea of encouraging people towards self-determination, and they like to be an example of this themselves. But their personal desire for independence continually conflicts with a need to remain in contact with the crowd.
The independent minds of the Minor Sixes will make them popular, but those who flock round them may, in the end, become wary of the independence. The criticisms by the Minor Six are competitive in nature and are designed to enhance their own recognition in the group or society. They want to be in areas of life where their personal and individual contribution can stand out, though we often find them as centralised spokespersons for their own coded messages.
Minor Sixes are annoyed by the pressures of custom and tradition, and like to shrug them off, but at the same time, they reluctantly admit that these are legitimate ways of participating in events. Minor Sixes expect to succeed, and once a task has been pinned down, and all its components understood, they are tempted to move on to another problem. Finishing tasks takes the most energy, and they react badly to the final hurdle that has to be overcome. Re-organisation is the practical task they enjoy the most. And this may be the area of principal disagreement with those colleagues and partners who want a more free-form approach to problem solving. Minor Sixes are skilful in marshalling the tools necessary to work on a problem, establishing parameters and creating ideal working conditions. They hate to cast about carelessly waiting for a gleam of inspiration to illuminate the darkness.
For Minor Sixes, life is a serious business for the most part, and they are happy to contemplate this seriousness from places of tranquility.

Sixes

The Major Sixes

Resolution of 4 / Resolves to 8 / Antagonised by 5 / Antagonises 7
Friends 6,2 >4 / Lovers 6 / Allies 1,3 / Rivals 1

6 is a step beyond the community interrelationships that balance open status and reward. In both the Major and Minor 6, there is the desire for independence and freedom of thought from the Landscape, though not for physical isolation. Sixes are bright, curious and like to achieve. They look for being valued by the community for their special contribution to events and the applause of the crowd. Sixes are leaders who like to stand a little to one side of the group rather than to be in the middle of it, and lead by seeing further into the situation than the rest. Sixes are intellectual and critical and like to be 'out ahead' of the pack in opinions and ideas. The practical, working solutions, the everyday agreements and solutions by which the community stabilises society, and the way it confirms traditions in its decision-making are all Antagonies to a Six.

The independence of Sixes and their desire for liberty comes from a self-conscious need to rise beyond the basic community structure while remaining in contact with it, in the manner of their own choosing. Sixes like to demolish and re-build. They can think of themselves as lone voices in the middle of the hubbub, as special, even unique minds. They are critics rather than accusers, and are sensitive to what lies beyond the ordinary, and to the higher noble dimension to human society namely, to humanity itself and the ideal of the greater good.

Thus, Sixes shine in two broad roles. One is the boss with a raft of devoted underlings supplying the appropriate feed. In this position, the best qualities of Sixes come out. They are magnanimous, understanding, intellectually on the ball, tactically astute, and try to minimise losses of all kinds where they can. They are good negotiators to have on your side since they make things difficult for the other side on almost every matter they personally control. The other role is that of 'spokesperson'. You can be pretty sure that in any lost tribe the individual who comes forward to be the researching anthropologist's right hand man will be a Six. This guide will re-tell every story and re-theorise about tribal precepts in their own versions and with their interpretations imposed on them, and relish doing so. The larger and more global the precept, however, the more likely it is that the Six will present that larger picture rather than his or her personal one. When ETIs arrive on Earth, a Six could make a good interpreter of the human cause to our benefit. On a smaller scale, however, Sixes' version is often far too particular to be right. They have to struggle to remove their personal biases. On the other hand, it is often the case that re-describing principles and arguments reveals holes and failings of logic and method that may not otherwise be obvious. So Sixes particular critical style can have creative consequences.

Sixes find working under bosses difficult. They particularly don't like bosses who have been sent from elsewhere, rather than those who have climbed the ladder in plain view. They find the fact of their approved 'superiority' challenging because it appears to run against a natural order, and will likely as not end spend a lot of time manoeuvring against them. Similarly, Sixes are difficult people to work with in a partnership because they do not really like others to make the running or to establish rights over any part of the territory they both are supposed to share. Sixes will stop obeying any of the usual courtesies of communication if they sense that another is beginning to put the stamp of their own authority on the job in hand. They won't bother with keeping you up with what they are doing or do much by way of acknowledging receipt of messages, and will communicate only when their ideas need to be put forward. They are genuinely appreciative of smart thinking and clever solutions, but they appreciate more the anonymous contribution to the joint effort, or the giver who gives selflessly without requiring acknowledgement. Sixes often react badly, though not necessarily overtly, if any of their efforts towards the joint goal are rejected or adapted. While they are critical of others, they find it hard to withstand criticism, and will try to make people take a detour around them. Sixes like to inform, though rather than informing you of stuff you don't know, they sometimes prefer to inform you of what you already know, only in their own way. They are often outraged if their understanding of the matters in hand is questioned.

Sixes seem to understand the human condition well and can analyse a person based on very few and diverse clues. And this is where we might find them, easily drawn to the fields of psychology, anthropology, sociology and other people-related fields. Environmental issues are also high on their list of concerns. Sixes like the areas of expression where they are the sole conceivers and producers of their work. If they are artists, they may want to convey a humanitarian message. They love beautiful and useful tools and can acquire a dedication to craftsmanship. But Sixes are also warriors, as they resolve towards 8, defending justice and homeland as much as they defend their own prosperity in problems often of their own making.

6 is a potent sign and embodies strength of belief, and the will to bend circumstances to their benefit. It takes a lot for a community truth to move their opinions. They learn by personalising information and tend to make any new knowledge their own personal property. They find it difficult to praise and to thank others for their contributions to their own understanding, or to accept the fact that others have trod the very path they are treading, and, perhaps, have seen further than them They give few standard authorities their due, preferring the maverick thinker whose work is not (yet) revered.

Sixes, being concerned with the bigger picture, their role within it, and how others are responding to it, have a tendency to re-categorise individual contributions into a generalised pigeonhole. Even those with the Minor 6 find themselves losing track of others' personal contributions to the events, and they are rather 'forgetful' of expressing the little appreciations of others and their contributions to events that so smooth the day-to-day for Fives. To Sixes, their sense of competition with others comes from the instinct to undermine traditional or established fields of endeavour that cannot be made their own.

Sixes belong on the same axis as Twos and consequently they have a healthy concern over resources. They tend to think of all things that they set out to do as an investment, and don't tend to be extravagant in their enjoyments of things. Sixes like to husband resources and not to place their wealth (in the broadest sense of talents and skills as well as riches) at risk. While they are happy to invest securely, they can be generous to the right cause, especially when they like to contradict vested interests.

Bringing out the idealism of Sixes helps them to shift their intense energy towards the greater good. For Sixes, the greater good is the survival of a moral and aesthetic sensibility required for the management of society. Sixes will take on their responsibilities and not shirk from obligation, although they are happy to pass on laborious work to others where they can. Sixes act positively, but they may often get stuck in a mire of duty, which they will bear with dignity, but sometimes irritably. They need praise and prizes to keep them going. They stand apart from the group but they are not insular; they like to feel that what they do is approved of. Sixes are made uneasy, however, by the tiny strands of complexity that any practical strategy will require, and will hunt for single great ideas that marshal and order the facts automatically. Their minds never rest, and they are at their best solving a puzzle where all the elements are known but the solution is still elusive. They are proud of their minds and often find ways in which they can let others know what they know. While they are stimulated in the company of independent thinkers like themselves, they are inevitably wary of any competition for reward, since recognition is what they seek. If they sense that their personal contribution is being swamped by the influences of others, they will shift their ground or exit from the situation.

They use their close human relationships to develop themselves as self-possessed focussed individuals who are oblivious of criticism and who have created stores of good things from which nourishment can be drawn. While Sixes think of their household and family as a private affair, a unit, independent of others, it is for them the seat of authority from which they can pronounce opinion. The Minor Sixes, especially, will tend to keep their critical analyses close to home and for those who touch them closely in the day-to-day. As the language of the everyday, this Minor will give any of the Majors unsettling opinions, spoken from home base, that tend to undermine comforts and tranquillity. They will raise their children their way and expect them to be special, but Sixes are unlikely to accept any competition from their children in areas of their own expertise.

The Minor Fives

Everyday Themes in the Minor Five

Minor 5 gives to any Major a basic social attractiveness and a hopeful outward looking personality, with a need to finish things. The Minor Fives are sensitive to those around them, but also practical, and understand what people want, and tend to go with the majority view. They have a feeling for propriety and manners between individuals, and Minor Fives expect people to listen to each other in a thoughtful way. But they are also bound by an order and a hierarchy and are connoisseurs of pecking orders. They may be too accepting of situations that are not in their best interests having a strong sense of what is generally preferable rather than what is preferable for them. This also leads them into situations they don't want to be in, and they can end up in escapades that make them feel guilty.
They rely on structure and the self-possession of others for the smooth running of events, and may lack skills in dealing with the recalcitrant or domineering individual. Their overt charitable, understanding and trusting natures are appealing to many, but they are all too ready to reject those who might de-stabilise the balanced environment. They are stoic about setbacks, but complain if too much stoicism is asked for?they don't want to be put in the background.
Minor Fives learn practical knowledge easily and tend to use this to compete with their peers, though they are less comfortable with abstractions and knowledge remote from the everyday. They need to express themselves in one way or another continuously, and are able talkers and debaters. They like to know who said what, and they are readily drawn into gossip and chat. They like the attention that comes from doing well, but, at the same time, they don't want to be set apart in a leadership position. Minor Fives may dither over difficult decisions and tend to ignore them until forced to make them. But in the end, the power of experience will help them make decisions easily. In work, they absorb the established viewpoint and can make decisions with it in mind.
Minor Fives will be advanced in social relationships and enjoy the popularity that comes with being more 'grown-up' than the rest. They wear sophistication easily and absorb the codes of society without question. They can spot trends and themes, and will begin to look outside their family and school to heroes and heroines and elite models of behaviour.
Minor Fives are optimistic, charming and moderate in their ambitions, and they always fear, at the back of their minds, being put out on a limb by success. They learn to measure their responses to a situation and hold back their creative power until they are more confident of their environment. They search for supportive friends, but look for approval from higher up the scale. They become wise to the way the world works and know when to intervene and when to leave alone. Community and equality, to Minor Fives, implies a practical code of conduct between individuals that they can learn easily and quickly. It seems to them that democracy is about behaviour more than economics. Minor Fives see the world as full of social duties but are never quite concerned enough to find what their own duty to others actually consists of.
When there is no pressure put on them to perform, their intellectual energies can develop in a more scholarly and authoritative direction. Minor 5 resolves to 1, so there will be an increasing interest in fresh ideas and choices to take. And because of this, the idea of having children as representatives of this new growth will become increasingly appealing. Minor Fives like a community of equals and would prefer their children to mature early to join them in it.
In the day-to-day, Minor Fives are quite happy to put important matters to the back and let the status quo keep going for a while, all the while measuring themselves up against the voices and conduct of the established authorities.

Fives

The Major Fives

Resolution of 1 / Resolves to 1 / Antagonised by 4 / Antagonises 6
Friends 5,1 / Lovers 5,1 / Allies 1,3,7 / Rivals 2

5 represents the Landscape and is divided into the potent half above the horizon (after the Spring equinox) and the fertile half below the horizon (after the Autumn equinox). Each Landscape sign describes a fertile and imaginative type and a potent and active type.
In the TO8 scheme, 5 represents the high point of social organisation and purposeful community activity. For Fives the social realities of status and ownership have a continuing existence that never vanishes, and they are attracted to social glamour and the basic experiences of social elites. While they believe in open and free communication, their democratic instincts tend to remain within the level of society in which they move, and they are always aware of the level of society that people belong to. Fives like to understand status and acknowledge it, and they accept that while people can and do move up and down the social hierarchy, eventually their status needs to become a fixed value.

Fives are sociable, energetic and competent. They have practical abilities and love to solve practical problems for the people around them. Fives are warm and enjoy keeping everyone around them happy, and expect that warmth in return. They are ready to flirt, though less happy for a flirtation to lead on to sex unless it consolidates their territory. Fives are a boon to community activities, identify with them and will labour hard for what they perceive is the common good. But they cannot operate well without feedback or encouragement. Fives most dread banishment from the group, and this fear motivates them to always find an answer and to accept personal situations that may end up being in their worst interest. It makes them territorial and wary of going outside their beat. Still, Fives are robust and can absorb and dissolve hurts and difficulties more ably than those off the landscape. They bounce back even against injustice.

Fives are fully socialised. They are considerate, giving people the dues they deserve, and are easy with the rewards they deserve. They find it difficult to deny anyone, and which generally means that their capabilities are often stretched, or that they are imposed upon or found in situations not of their making. At the same time, they have capability and resilience, seeing along the Landscape to the options sunrise can offer, and can be urged on to great things. For Fives, problems have solutions. If there are really no solutions to be had than that is the way it is; if they are checkmated in the rules of the game than that also is that. The idea that they could, as it were, knock the chessboard over, doesn't occur to them.
The social hierarchy is something to be respected, and they would expect, in time, to have a firm position on it, and from where they could participate in the decision-making process. Debate and discussion is all important to them, and social communication is a continuous process of contact and chat, where polling for opinion is crucial to making a decision. They pay close attention to who has what idea, because the source is as defining as the content; the messenger is as important as the message he or she brings. To a Five an authority is one that has a social position.

Because of their openness, we would find Fives in occupations that deal with people and interpersonal structures, especially in communication, entertainment, politics and public relations. While Fives are able organisers of work priorities, they are less able bureaucrats. They like to balance energies and find real immediate solutions to problems, and rely a great deal on the expertise and confidence of others. Fives' strength comes from being part of the orthodox majority view. They measure themselves and the opinions of others against the highest consensus, while comparing with it the common good of their friends, family and neighbours. They aim to find the most satisfaction in the solution that works well for everyone, not just for themselves.

Fives have a sense in which service accumulates, and that rewards should match the extent of work performed. Work has a value outside of 'deals', and Fives are confident and see the issues that confront them with clarity and certainty, but they form opinions or a course of action through consultation. Fives understand human relationships well, and would make good advisors for friends and family, but they are not just passive listeners. They express their opinions directly and may dominate others simply through their frankness. They need to be involved in both the setting out of the problem and in finding the solution. Guiding a working solution into place gives them a social satisfaction. Fives (especially double Fives) are also literal and are less easy with symbols and implied meanings. Their eyes are on the social dynamic outside their personal condition and are less patient with sickness and personal problems that try to draw them away from that dynamic. They are also uneasy with partners who fail to connect with this same dynamic or whose trend is ultimately away from it to personal fulfilment. Fives are easily mocked by cynical minds but are not easily bettered since they try to integrate rather than divide.
The Landscape is, of course, also about the environment, and Fives are naturally drawn to decorate their spaces and to populate them with objects of value and social significance.
As children, Fives learn social skills quickly and often can behave in a more adult way than their peers. They like to play out complex social situations with their playmates and dislike being treated like children.

There are two types of Major 5, the potent (+) and the fertile (o). The social situation is, for fertile Fives, the cauldron of human affairs, and they are happy with whatever stew is cooking. They love to play host to those also committed to the social scene, and like to participate in the debates of free minds looking for a solution to a community problem. Potent Fives prefer practical jobs that deal with people and the issues of the day, and they have little problem understanding tools and getting things done. They are best among their peers, sharing difficulties and satisfactions together, where each member of the group gives his individual best. They prefer the definite well-articulated issue. Doubts and tentative discussions do not interest them; only the notions that people act upon hold any interest for Fives. They can be stern, even angry, and, through their ability to confront the actual, able to sway others to the majority view.

Fertile Fives have the energy to lead but need to have this right thrust upon them in order to exploit it. They like strangers with new things to offer, but they are wary of outsiders who might tangle up the forum of debate with side issues and problems that do not respect the orthodoxy. They suffer when they are misled. They enjoy making things and building up teams of happy workers with the aim of improving their community and family life but are sensitive to any mavericks included in the group. They do not want to rock any boat with their own ideas, and do not like to contemplate notions they have not shared with the rest. Fertile Fives are always generous to those they like, but are more sensitive than potent Fives to the consequences to their status of their generous acts.

The Minor Four

Everyday Themes in the Minor Four

The qualities of the Minor 4 have most impact in relationships and work, and, as it resolves across the landscape to 6, from day to night, from fertile to potent, from unfocussed to focussed, it has the potential for giving the Major paired with it quite radical changes in heart and mind.
They seem diffident to the particular concerns of their peers and can seem to be too serious for their age, maintaining an outward self-reliance and optimism that the world is benign?at least for them. As a Minor, 4 gives a Major an ability to retreat from everyday demands and to worry over a problem until it is solved or disappears. The Minor gives the Major a sense of dissatisfaction with solutions and answers that fuels their desire to create a better truth but also gives them a concern for things that may not be worth attending to.
Minor Fours readily present (and may get to like presenting) a sense of combining romantic and sexual possibilities in their relations with others. Minor Fours will be sexually aware, but may lack the social confidence to express their preferences, often remaining shy of pursuing their romantic interests, since they are wary of doing the wrong thing. Only in new associations can they forget their reticence, though can put at risk working relationships with romance and vice versa.
They realise that nothing is perfect and something else may well be better than what you have. Minor Fours will always have little things to tidy up in their lives, and they are ready to doubt even the most established facts. They are able to see the picture that no one else sees clearly, and draw the broadly right conclusions often unnoticed by the community and often without effort. Their way of re-describing information often simplifies puzzles, while their associative thinking can complicate simplicities. Minor Fours need to revise their own work, and will always be revising their first impressions. Even though Minor Fours have very good memories for patterns of knowledge, specific detail can be conveniently forgotten if it gets in the way of a pleasing pattern. Quickly absorbing ideas is their natural mode, but learning a specific thing or to a specific plan is more taxing. They need to have the reasons for things explained and they need to be directed in their studies.
In their early years, they may lack any focussed ambition and drift into things by default. But they do want success and achievement, and the drive to succeed may eventually overcome their feelings of lethargy and sense of remoteness from the ordinary day-to-day. They tend not to put all their efforts into finishing one thing but prefer to bring the many things they are doing to an end together.
Minor Fours can generally feel at home anywhere, having a poetic rather than a logician's view of the day-to-day. They take in everything at a glance, but might have difficulty in explaining what they have learnt from that glance. They need time to consider their opinion and decision, and often do not know what they think until they are forced to say it. The Minor Four is fearful of getting involved in the world and they may subtlety avoid having to take part in, and in being spoilt by, the realities of adult life, though they are appreciative of happy social gatherings where they can express their ideas. They want to appear knowing, even with little substance behind them. They are self-conscious of their need of eventual applause, and are dutiful rather than charitable. Only when the issues are personal will they come to the fight.

Fours

The Major Fours

Resolutions of 2 / Resolves to 6 / Antagonised by 3 /Antagonises 5
Friends 4,8 >2 / Lovers 4 / Allies 7,1 / Rivals 7

4 lies between the pure logical expression of the individual mind of 3 and the socialised being of 5. Until they resolve, Fours are caught between the Threes' extrovert nature, which antagonises them, and the balanced arrangements of the Landscape Fives, which they, in turn, antagonise with their perceptions of fault-lines and errors. They have reserves of ability but are often blocked from expressing it by this sensation of difference from normal expectations, but at the same time, they are drawn far too readily to the 5 of the Landscape of conclusions. Where Eights can be generous with their thoughts, Fours are generous with their time and space. Fours are antagonised by 3, and so they are anxious about standing out on their own, and remain always untrusting of their own powers of expression and don't like to be exposed to examination. They have hidden resilience and tenacity and can flourish in unlikely situations.

In a seeming contradiction to their underlying capability, Fours often start off with little idea of how long things take to do, how far places are separated on the Landscape or what constitutes an achievable plan of attack. But because of this, launching an enquiry or beginning any project holds no fears (though having to finish one does). This ability, however, also gives them a lack of realistic perspective, at least at the beginnings of any examination of a problem. Argue with a Four and you will probably end up in a widening gyre of metaphors, allusions and offbeat parallels. Fours get results often by sticking to activities and staying faithful to an approach to a problem for long periods of time (when combined with a Landscape Minor), often failing to drop them when they lose their purpose or when conclusions cannot still be reached. Completing and finishing things can be a problem for Fours, and they can infect almost everything they do with little errors, and which Fours may not like in a theoretical sense but yet think are unimportant in the scheme of things. But given a second go at something, Fours usually not only get it right but also improve upon the solution. They naturally think by association, and can make the most revealing connections between diverse phenomenon and ideas.

What marks them out from others is their continual evolving understanding of what is going on and how things happen, and they are, in combination with the Landscape, happy to stick to a task without any end in sight, learning all the while. They are resilient learners who cope with their inhibitions by gradually piecing together the lessons of life and composing appropriate actions. For Fours, knowing something can often be, at first, a de-stabilising influence. In the everyday, Fours begin to establish a point of view with ideas that seem to be oblique to the point, although later analysis will show that they were more right than they seemed.

Fours have a developing conscientiousness but they are not very thoughtful or considerate to those on the Landscape, even though they know that the correct forms of behaviour are important to them. They antagonise the Landscape with their often unconscious undermining of basic social arrangements, and often miss the point about a social engagement. Without a Landscape or energy (7, 3) Minor, Fours can often be rather lost in the social reality, hanging on to odd ideas and being generally frustrated by what seems to them the naturalness of others.

As a fertile sign, Fours are associative and intuitive thinkers who 'see' directly to solutions that others find difficult to understand without logical analysis. They do well as mavericks in philosophical or science subjects but do less well in formal academic structures. They have the knack of finding analogy and the metaphor for whatever they teach, but they make reluctant lecturers, and they would probably be most inspiring outside of the formal class, extemporising on whatever catches their fancy. They are likely to be most interested in the mystery of teaching and learning, and in how knowledge gets transferred in the process. They would make a good addition to the creative department of any business, especially advertising or film. They are best when out on their own, working at their own tempo. They are self-sufficient and resourceful and enjoy their own company but may be seen as unrealistic and daydreamers by others. Whatever they do, they will try to bring to it the touch of the poet.

Much of Four's mental effort goes into discovering why they should support the orthodox solution, since their main mode of intellectual examination is to think their way from a solution rather than towards it. As a fertile sign, Fours have a broad base of assumed knowledge although their drive towards 6 gives them an underlying persistence in their search for the right answer that surprises many. They are tuned to the image and visual perceptions generally. They understand the world readily in terms of cycles and patterns, and they try to combine intellectual knowledge and cultural history in a single pattern, often leaping to an assumption based on a pattern in order to explain a phenomenon. Fours love to conceptualise and categorise, and they can look at everything, including people, in terms of categories.

Give Fours a pat way of thinking about something or a pat answer to a problem, and another way of thinking about it will suggest itself, without he or she necessarily being conscious that that is what they are doing. They don't like to take other people's words for anything that they are particularly involved with. On the other hand, Fours want to be right. They know, deep down, they are mostly right about most things, even if they cannot phrase this knowledge in a way that convinces others. They have a high degree of anticipation of what others think. This tendency, modulated by the Minor, makes them answer the question not spoken and the implicit idea.

Fours are highly sexually aware, and sex can easily be in the air in social encounters. Fours are ready to make sexual partnerships, and their sense of well-being and contentment comes from sexual satisfaction as much as it does from creative thought. Fours have a knack of making their sexual relationships iconoclastic exercises in subversion, and the presence of Fours may subtly undermine the hierarchy of community relationships they are in and the accepted reward system that keeps them society stable.

Being off the Landscape, Fours hunt for the higher purpose of human relations. They acquire a strong romantic imagination early. They like to confront the puzzles of consciousness, and can revel in the paradoxes of humanity's existence. They have a strong sense of guilt but a weak sense of the appropriate duty and can be easily directed by others who play upon this weakness. The Minor with which the Major 4 is paired is very important to the way Fours view their personal responsibilities. They resolve towards 6, below the horizon line and into the night, and where they intensify their interest in dream and pattern and take on melancholy airs and intermittent depression.

4 is a fertile sign, and the direction of expression is outwards from the broad, unfocussed base of the interior of the mind. In energy terms, Fours have passions and feelings disconnected from a concrete reality that often seems to them to be distant. (This is why Fours can work best inside a supporting structure.) This disconnection is a necessary factor in creative thought, but it also tends to give Landscape a reason not to give Fours consideration.

Being off the Landscape, Fours are a little suspicious and paranoid about orthodoxy, but they see the other side of its coin namely, lies and deceit. They are, after all, the Antagony to the authority of reasonable community-oriented solutions offered by 5. So, Fours are certainly likely to be attracted to unlikely explanatory scenarios or be suspicious of surface explanations, and are less than impressed by authorities. They can think the worst when they are uninformed not just of the Establishment but also of friends and colleagues. They are ready to doubt in themselves even when others approve of them, and the fear of failure can be inhibiting. Indeed, they may be too ready to assume their faults cause the failures of others.

In 5, there is the notion of place in the established hierarchy of approved places—a garden, if you will, in which every item has been placed and ordered with reference to every other. Fours cannot help but upset this order and to re-assign values, but may be unable to provide concrete replacements for them, only hints of where things should go, what re-arrangements would be necessary. If a Four wants to make contact with the Landscape, he or she needs people to help them do it, and when they work, associates and their needs often hamstring them.

The Minor Threes

Everyday Themes in the Minor Three

Minor Threes will be gregarious, show leadership skills early, and be bright and popular among their peers. The Minor gives positive energy to every Major but also an arrogance about or a disconnection with the ordinary everyday activities of the home. The Minor Threes tend to feel above or apart from the petty day-to-day of home life, trying to relate to others on their own terms.
As they grow, Minor Threes will command greater resources, both in time and energy, from outside their family. They are aware of world issues, which may cause them great distress but they are less mullers over things than direct actors in them. The more they are held back, the more confusion grows in their minds. They learn better with lively and varied classes rather than dry, abstract and step-wise learning. Minor Threes can absorb best in the act than from teachers and in the act, and like examples rather than metaphors. They put what they have learnt to good use; it is the raft on which their consciousness rides.
Threes are always hunting for a means of self-expression, and thus are draw to art, writing and teaching. They tend to have discrimination but fail to develop an individual taste; they can divide, but don't know how to choose. They like maps to help them find their way around the cultural and social reality, and they may get lost in the absence of a trusted guide. This awareness gives them modesty in the everyday that can disappear when conditions are right. Minor Threes like to prepare their arguments, and will debate well. But even though they can focus well on an issue, they are often sidetracked by facts and find it difficult to weave an overview out of evidence. They may find it difficult to jump immediately to a new conclusion when new facts present themselves, but they can and will, as soon as they have verified the facts.
Minor Threes feel daily life is for living. They shift ground, finding the current best means of moving forward. Set backs will not set them back for long. The future always remains friendly and desirable, and Minor Threes are generally optimistic as long as their minds arrive on the Landscape. Minor Threes have personal charm and make friends easily, but the pressing need to be in action may easily obscure their social merits. Unless they know they can relax, they are likely to be distant with those who are not part of their work scene. There is no time to lose in fruitless daydreams; the business of life is serious! They can feel sidelined by rest, and will not take much time off from what they want to be doing. When work is over and it is officially time to relax, then those of this sign become charismatic and more considerate. They have no trouble befriending authority, but they can relax best when they are the authority. Minor Threes believe that being considerate and aloof from pettiness are actual functions of authority. As subordinates, though, they may feel they have no time for being magnanimous.
As the Major, the Minor Threes can override personal dislikes and work with anyone; even with those they burnt bridges with before. They can restrain their rancour as long as the job is going forward. They can put their anger with colleagues to good use for as long as the mutual action continues. But once the 'protection' of the job is over, Minor Threes may lose their patience with those they take against.

Threes

The Major Threes

Resolution of - / Resolves to 5 / Antagonised by 2 / Antagonises 4
Friends 3,7 >8 / Lovers 3 / Allies 5,7 >1 / Rivals 8

3 describes the need to and the energy by which we express self-consciousness. It's the fundamental requirement of evolution that individuals try to give the fullest account of themselves, and 3 is the strongest expression of this motive force, although the medium of the Minor through which the 3 can express itself is crucial to the power that a Three can eventually wield, and crucial, too, to their eventual satisfaction. Combine a 3 Major with a Landscape Minor and you have a person who gets things done, who barely rests and is always on the lookout for ways and means to do things. But combining with the two 'off-Landscape' axes, Threes have two internal conflicts with Minors 2 and 4 that sow doubt and uncertainty in their plans, and two contradictions with Minors 8 and 6 that resists compatibility with others.

Like Sixes, Threes do not like their actions to be shaped by constraints imposed on them, though unlike Sixes or Eights, they have no reason to feel that constraints undermine them. On the contrary, their energy is such that many types of constraint are simply not visible to them as such. They can survive in any kind of unpromising situation, since they tend to work for the now rather than for the future, leaving them always with a little bit more to do, and which they are happy to have. One of their motivations to control others for fear of being swamped by circumstances. They look down the other end of their axis to 7, and to what they see as a nadir of helplessness, and seek to avoid its influence. We can think of the 7 as being the unconscious for Threes, and it's a no-go area for them. While they can ponder the state of 7 intellectually, in the full sun as it were, they are not willing to descend into it and lose themselves in its mystery. They are happier with the ritual than the essence, with the play rather than reality.

When we look at Threes, we see forceful and powerful people setting out to make their presence felt in the world. Threes are people you want to have around you when there's a job to be done and a deadline for its completion, though you will find Threes get you doing more than you might have expected to do. Goals must be clearly set in case they do more than is necessary, and lines of authority must be clear. When put in a position of providing, Threes take the job of looking after their charges seriously.

Threes' energy goes into whatever they do but it is most notable in its ability to inspire people to work alongside them. They can be found in any structured job or profession that assists the organising process that Threes excel at, but often they gravitate towards artistic expression, teaching and management where they can develop themselves, and keep on expressing what they know about the world. They are difficult to manage, however, and although you are more likely to find a Three in work than unemployed, you are more likely to find a Three quitting unexpectedly when things aren't right.

Threes are able to logically transform intentions to realisations, and this makes them leaders in whatever is current. They seem to be completely capable (not necessarily practical or even right) and, most important of all, motivated, but in truth, Threes can often be at sea with confusion and mystery since it is the route to answers that inspires them. They are, in fact, remote from the landscape of social reality, and are trying urgently to reach it. In this respect, Threes will grasp at any hint or clue about facts, or even, as a last resort, make up a truth to kick-start their actions if they are kept from the supply of genuine information. They can seize upon rumour or suspicion; even enlarge upon them if they help produce what they are aiming for and turn them into virtues. As opposed to Sevens who depend upon external circumstance to drive the activity, Threes rely on small even unattached detail from which they build the motor. They can thrive in market environments of rumour and speculation, and are formidable manipulators of people who do not have the same awareness. Though energetic, they tend to exhaust their powers on every aspect of their projects rather than carefully applying themselves to where they are most needed: delegating responsibility does not come naturally, and where they do delegate they then tend to wash their hands of subsequent events.

Threes control what swims within their sphere and express what's on their minds. They are able to apply their gifts for understanding and action to both theoretical and practical tasks. They may feel they have energy to spare for several projects and spread themselves too thin on many interesting opportunities. They worry about obstacles to getting the work done, but they have confidence in their abilities to overcome them. The drive to the finish can even cause Threes to overtax themselves at the expense of their health and relationships. Threes' understanding, while covering great breadth, tends to remain in the Landscape of social reality. They do not like to seek explanations or motivations deep in the psyche or in the inevitable trends of history. They stand in awe of associative thinking, feel menaced by categorisations, live by logic and like to use generalisations to frame problems.
Should they go too far or too fast in their reach for the social reality, they may end up at the opposite pole, lost and frightened by the incalculable truths of existence. Threes like to believe in themselves and in others, and are happy to give the underdog a chance. They have a basic trust in the goodness of all outcomes, which makes them compassionate, though this trust is often misplaced. Threes only want to hold positive momentum in their minds and would prefer to trust than not. They may give more time to their work than to their friends, but they will never be short of friends. They love the ambience of chatty parties, and like nothing more than to meet up with friends as often as possible. Threes make marvellous companions in travel and new sights excite them, but may get themselves in hot water with their lack of caution. Health issues are always going to be an irritation, often ignored, in the background.

The Minor Two

Everyday Themes in the Minor Two

Minor Twos are generally optimistic and want to see the plus side to things. They are trying to make sense and order out of the adult world with the themes and examples taken from their home relationships. What makes sense to them are appetites, physical security, lines of authority. Minor Twos are excitable, and may believe that passions are the most important human drive. Yet, they are unlikely to indulge their passions to the full for fear of losing balance. They feel disappointment and frustration with not being 'fulfilled' in everyday living.
They look for 'street cred' and may like to belong to a 'cool' gang (as long as they can get home for supper). Because 1 is their Antagony, Minor Twos may be quite resistant to changes in the established order of things (new demands in the home can make for a sullen child), and certainly to anything that smacks of elitism. Minor Twos may be reluctant to learn by rote and prefer systems of learning and the connections between things.
They are sensitive to the idea of restraint, both physical and intellectual, or to rigid sequences of events that they cannot order for themselves. Minor Twos can exploit any weakness in lines of authority through subtlety rather than confrontation and they are always ready to step in to repair their failures. They can become rebels without causes, non-conformists who remain on the doorstep. New modes of thought, fashion, even changes in our view of history are considered worthy targets for disdain if ever they come to dominate their community. While Minor Twos feel unsettled by the effects of change, they hope that ultimately, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Minor Twos like to keep close to their family and the home background. They may be precocious youths, mimicking the adults around them.
The Minor 2 can lend to any Major a happy materialism: a happy ambition to gain comforts and success, and improvements to home and circumstances, a better standard of life. In work, Minor Twos will find themselves drawn to bureaucratic-type organisations and even politics, although they will tend to subvert any rigid career ladder. Minor Twos perform best in jobs where there is more than one way to reach the next level.
Minor Twos have a skilful and determined organising streak, but they always like to keep something of their intentions back. They want everything to be out in the open, and everyone open-minded, while they chose which way to go. Because nothing around them seems ever completely decided and always in need of attention or 'tuning', they can acquire a reputation for refinement in their tastes.
Minor Twos are attentive to the general mood of the times, but they don't like to align themselves with the status quo. Minor Twos are social as long as the social event is loose and dynamic. Even as a guest, they don't like to be tied down. They like to move around sampling the mood and finding the important line. They like to make and break relationships continually but never to leave a door shut to the wider scene, or a bridge demolished. They like to see all doors kept open, especially the ones they have recently been through, in case they want to go back.
Even while they amuse themselves with their comforts, they hear distant echoes of a world beyond. There is the intermittent sensation of a higher purpose, but with no sense of urgency about its implications. From time to time, they indulge their curiosity in the spiritual side of life, but may not find anything that interests them until their later years.

Twos

The Major Twos

Resolution of 8 / Resolves to 4 / Antagonised by 1 / Antagonises 3
Friends 2,6 >8 / Lovers 2 / Allies 5,7 / Rivals 5

2 marks the first steps above the Landscape, where self-preservation becomes central once more to the mental orientation the individual. Twos avoid anything that hints at overcontrol or containment and may easily walk further (in a circle) than a One to get away from having to accept what is not central to their needs. This need for self-preservation shows up in Twos' abilities to categorize and systematize information and emotion in the organization of relationships and human networks. Both the Major and Minor employ a way of extracting duties and obligations from others that is akin to the organic growth of plant roots. The roots are both an anchor and a supply chain to the main plant. The binding energy is respect. Twos will offer respect of you but they also require it from you.

For Twos, an acquaintance is someone to be fitted into an arrangement. People who retain their independence and who are going their own way are of little interest to them. You may be able to wring concessions out of a Two but getting them to adhere to what you've agreed is something else again. If you think you've got the better of a Two then you're most likely mistaken. If a Two does make a concession to you then that is because he or she is looking to find another kind of commitment from you. Twos, however, are less keen on being held to any direct obligation themselves. They prefer a more subtle approach, and often give the impression of being above it all or a little to one side of the politicking. Do a favour for a Two and that Two will most likely find an unusual way or for someone else to return the favour. Twos are happy to help those who accept their arrangements, and they function best as leaders within a structure where they can generously assist those who are committed to the group.

In looser forms of organisation, Twos are best as ministers or second-in-commands with their private channels of action and communication. They tend to be employers of other's talents, and are adept at seeing where a gap can be filled and the person who would best fill it. Where they have power, they surround themselves with those who complement the needs of the group they are building. As partners in a cooperative enterprise, however, they are less content, and will have a tendency to perversely act at right angles to most agreed decisions. Twos like to work from behind the scenes and to take the less obvious routes to the goals, informing only their intimate band of what they are doing. Knowing that they are the kingpins around which important or necessary people circulate is often sufficient reward for them.
They enjoy knowing what you don't know but have little compulsion to crow about it and will happily tell you what they know if they think you need to know it. They take comfort in formalities, which help them relax, but they do not like to be coerced by order and precedent, or by detours and shifting ground. Realising that they are being out-manoeuvred is a great spur to action. A sense of exclusion or of being sidelined touches their vanity like nothing else.

Twos are not natural revealers of their intentions and they are often irritable in a diffuse and undirected way when their plans are disturbed by events. While they can unite disparate data into coherent sets of useful information, they keep mum or are—more usually—smoke-screening their personal motivations until the time is right to reveal them (and often only to a chosen few). On the other hand, they can enjoy the confessional aspect of a confidence, especially if their revelations bring people more strongly into their influence, even though they are unlikely to reveal the whole story. Twos normally have a calm and natural way about them, and manage to convey the notion that personal relationships exist for pleasure and stability and less for self-improvement or worldly success,

Twos are managers rather than leaders and prefer to manage already existing avenues of action rather than create new ones. They are the natural ally to inspirational leaders, and are most comfortable in the role of minister rather than chief. They are happy to partner those who do supply authoritative leadership, and their management skills are best directed to balancing their position among powerful but static interests. Any leader or ally that opts for open community oriented decision making would be undermined, and Twos often want to level those star performers who play to a large constituency. They understand the nature of gifts and support, and they keep people interested in them through their people skills and their general good manners and thoughtfulness. They will keep communications open even to those who have fallen by the wayside. They can handle information well, and they enjoy telling and hearing good stories.

Twos' main strength, of course, is in obligation, but not just the obligations to themselves but those that exist in the complex debts and counter-debts between members of a circle. A service rendered is a service remembered for all time, and eventually, Twos will call in the debt. Twos' fundamental criticism of anybody is that they fail to clear service debts. This is distinct from money debt. Twos are alert to the favour, and their vanity revolves around the extent to which favours are acknowledged. They don't have to be paid on any particular time scale, they want to know that you know there is a debt due, and once they are sure that you understand the system, then they cannot do enough for you.

Twos are aware that what they know will change organically. They would never think they had the last word on anything, and they are quite happy to alter their opinions although they will never acknowledge or give a roadmap to the changes of their mind. This is the second level of their vanity. Their opinions must occupy the centre and it must never be suggested that once they didn't have that opinion. When it comes to negotiating contracts, Twos, during negotiations, will prefer to take back the whole document and present a new re-written one time and again, than to bat a copy back and forth that shows all the edits and revisions on it. Twos are best at the talking over a beer or a lunch bit, the weekend activity bit, but less good in the tightly wound world of deadlines and fast responses. In this respect, they are best leading the team from behind, immersed in the micro tactics, and their focus is definitely on the private success of obscure ploys, rather than on the open, straightforward, generalised good.

Stylistically, they may easily hide their good grasp of organisation, statistics and the patterns of knowledge, with whatever seems credible to their group. They may shy away from following up-to-the-minute fashions since their stylistic purpose is usually to misdirect rather than to give away specific attitudes. Twos enjoy a manner, a way of being, rather than fashion, however, and work on their manner in subtle ways.

If you are moving to a new town and you only know one person, hope that person is a Two. A Two will be able to help you find an apartment, even a new circle of friends. Twos know the best restaurants and hot spots. They may set you up with a couple of job interviews, and know who will take that new litter of kittens off your hands. In return, Twos will expect you to share your news, skills and resources on their terms rather than yours. You can expect Twos to listen to you but you cannot expect that Twos will do what you want or even what you think you need. In spite of their good deeds, Twos arrange things for themselves, and the favour they do you is part of their plan rather than yours.

Twos can be found in almost any occupation where personal contacts are essential to the conduct of business. They may also be active members of a church, club, PTA, etc. They are good bureaucrats, grants men, politicians and movie producers. The Minor Two is good at soaking up learning and arranging diverse elements into proper groupings.

Twos (2 is an fertile sign above the horizon) are by nature generally positive, optimistic and non-confrontational, easily acquiring a breadth of expression that may surprise others. Yet, it is the inner sensation of precariousness that governs much of what they do. They are unlikely people to starve in an attic pursuing their dream or following their own line of investigation regardless. Like Sixes on the same axis, they are keen on preserving their personal resources. The Minor 2 gives any Major a concern for keeping up appearances. Twos feel strongly destabilised when truths about themselves, especially about their errors and mistakes of judgement, are in the hands of others.

Twos like to form private inner circles of friendships, and they often create separate realms for work colleagues and family. They sense that their extensive circle of acquaintances is alive with favours, obligations and trades. They like to keep the strands of their networks healthy, and they see friendship as a purposeful activity where information and contacts, guidance and assistance are exchanged. They cling tightly to the interior family relationships that are often a source of inspiration and comfort for them, while they look upon exterior social connections as important means to further their actions in the world. All newcomers are likely recruits to a Twos network or circle of friends, but admission requires the tacit acceptance of the influence of the Twos. Doing a favour is a separate from what the favour actually is. In this way, Twos break the serial nature of cause and effect that their Antagony, 1 on the landscape accepts without question.

1 on the Landscape antagonises Twos. The idea that there exists a precise sequence of events outside of themselves that should be followed means less to them than finding a strategy that fits in with others already in play. They would not pay any heed to the concept that a project can be run with many people all on parallel paths. As a project manager, they think of themselves as the bearing of the hub around which all turns at a set pace and where the solution is planned to arrive at a particular turn of the wheel. They do not hurry, nor do they slack; only when they are balanced can they act quickly; the more unbalanced they feel, the more stately their progress.

Twos take care with how they present themselves, and as has been mentioned, develop a personal style that is designed to consolidate their place in the world rather than set them apart. They enjoy the material benefits of their success, and like others to enjoy them too. They are sensual and sexual, and they consider the enjoyment of their pleasures an art.
Twos are not afraid of paperwork and they understand what they are entitled to and how to get it. They subscribe to form but not to rules, especially inconvenient ones. They get things done their way simply by not doing it any other way. They passively resist any course of action that they do not perceive to be precisely in their best interests, and, unlike those on the Landscape, feel no obligation to consider other people's concerns when taking it.

The Minor One

Everyday Themes in the Minor One

The Minor One gives youthful energy, curiosity, and an interest in the trends in ideas to the Major. Those with the Minor 1 are lively, responsive, questioning, and communicative, absorbed in the things around them. They enjoy relating to those with similar outlooks and like to seek out those key people who are responsible for social and technological change. They are peer-minded and like to join small teams or groups and to keep an eye out for new team members. Everyday life is a matter of getting tasks in the right order, and they may find it difficult to step back from their life and get a broader view of what is happening to them and where they want to go.
Minor Ones can profit from learning. They like to be out and about, exploring roles, daring and challenging. They seem to have the essence of youth: curious and questing, talkative and funny. But they can be exhausting because they never want to rest. They play easily and are generally happy in stimulating environments. In dull or restrained environments, they become stressed. Discovering and seeking out new fields of interest is something of a race for them, and they have an acute sense of priority and in being 'first'.
They often have a better understanding of the cogs of the working world than other Minors, and, as children, they tend to challenge adults who are less able and versatile than they are. They will opt for careers that give them as much movement as possible. When they set off on their journeys they like to give the impression of launching out into the blue, but they have a good idea of where they are going to land. They find it difficult to centre their restless minds. They like to look down every alleyway, and may find it difficult to present the sum of their work as a cohesive whole, and they take a dim view of anything or anyone that disturbs this picture. They would like to encapsulate the liveliness, the intelligence and all the best of their questing life in a leading social role.
Minor Ones enjoy energetic argument, but are less happy with social chitchat. They prefer to keep to etiquette and good manners, and enjoy the concept of the people's forum where discussion follows accepted rules, as long as interesting things are said and conclusions are arrived at. They react badly to being overshadowed in company, and will tend to slip away from attacks (depending on their Major) with cleverness and acidity, pouncing on logical jumps or flaws in conclusions. They are observers of what others get up to and note anything out of place or exceptional, a false step in an argument, a bargain in a store, better than average odds.
They don't like to waste the money in their pockets but they are also happy to spend it to make something better than it was before. They see the charitable act as an enabling process. They will risk their cash on their abilities to calculate better than others, and social games like poker or bridge may well be attractive to them, whereas strategic games for two players, while intellectually interesting, are less attractive. If they bet, they will bet on propositions whose outcomes have well-defined probabilities.
Minor Ones make 'classic' friends, in that they are sociable, like to converse about everything, have logical but compassionate minds, and have a forward looking energy that can pull the team or the group along. They have less interest in indulging in the sentimental and will be brisk when getting bogged down in navel-gazing threatens.

The Major Ones

Resolution of 5,7 / Resolves to 5 / Antagonised by 8 / Antagonises 2
Friends 1,5 / Lovers 1,5 / Allies 5,3,7 / Rivals 6

1 is the sunrise end of the Landscape of social reality, and is divided into a potent type (+) above the horizon (after the Spring equinox) and a fertile type (o) below the horizon (after the Autumn equinox).

Generally, Ones are attractive sunrise folk with a can-do attitude, who are fundamentally restless both physically and intellectually but are constrained by the order of tasks at each moment and the perception of a necessary sequence to events. They are searching for the pathway to the peak, the outstanding act, the best formulation and the rarest experience within the context of the society they belong to, and this is always changing. They like to act within a 'fraternity' of self-sufficient explorers like themselves who understand the same goals as they do. For Ones, the 'voyage' or 'progression' is the means of belonging to the best, and they will look for those on parallel progressions in the hope of finding colleagues and a close comradeship of tried and tested individuals. The social experience of a wide amorphous group of people is less attractive to them and rather than add new friends to an ever-widening circle, they tend to replace one set of intimate friends with another.

Ones are all adjustment and calculation, and as such make fine leaders and bosses of technical projects. Their eye hardly discriminates between tasks. Everything needs to be looked over and adjusted for success, just as people need to be looked over and (possibly) adjusted for success. At the same time, Ones are outward going, sociable, on an even keel, but most at ease with the same confident aware minds as theirs, to which they naturally gravitate. Mutual intelligence is an important factor in friendships as well as in work colleagues.

Think of Ones as those setting out on the expedition to a planned goal, fully rationalised but not yet reached or realised by others. For them the 'best' is the furthest target of the progression, the unoccupied peak. The basic lay of the land and the pathway to it are all understood, even though some deviations may be necessary along the way. Ones want to leave behind their Antagony, the Eight, the self-contained 'child' who is less willing to reach beyond themselves and who is always the critic of a journey not really required.
They understand the missions of enterprises and activities outside of their needs. They are more at ease with facts, data, proofs and plans than nebulous propositions and speculation. They will generally run other people's businesses better than their own. With their commitment to the task in hand, they lead by example, requiring an established and well-defined context within which they can act.

Other than forward-looking business management, we might find them working science journalism, advertising and media, artists' agencies, experimental science, and the fashion world. They have a keen intellectual interest in what makes the society in which they move tick. They would be advocates of the latest trends, and great readers of material in their field, be they technical journals, newspapers or magazines.

What Ones do is what they are, and their potential is what they will be. While they have a desire for the tradition of family life and especially for children, they are not drawn into a defensive position with respect to its daily activities. Life is one continuous development: work, career, family are fragments of a single integrated success, although being 'out in the world' is the core on which all else is hung. They are alert to the potential of new ideas and like to be challenged by novelty rather than be surprised by it, but are not especially curious of mystery, and are not necessarily open to untried ways and means, unless they produce a better plan and one intending to produce conclusions that are more definite.

Ones are planners for whom the ordering and sequence of events is the most important action. They do not perceive themselves as either existing in isolation or at rest in the environment; neither does a piece of information exist passively in isolation or in the abstract. Knowledge belongs to a plan and items have a place and a consequence to them. The Minor 1 gives any Major a practical means of bringing almost any task to a conclusion except for those tasks about which little can be known beforehand. Ones are explorers of trails that have at least been mapped out if not actually travelled beforehand. The essence of their contribution is to cut down meanders and to see through to the goal.

The potent types of 1 (+) prefer lively exchanges of information within the group. They are impatient with monologues, and are happy to deflate or wrong-foot anyone who is holding the floor too long. They like play and physical activity and use to learn about life and how to get about the landscape, but they reject facile game-playing for game-playing's sake, the glib message and the platitude (although the cliché can serve its purpose). They enjoy most games with a tactical component to them, but few pastimes can keep them occupied for long. They are always interested in new ideas, but dislike the 'institution' of sage or guru. They like to spend time where the action is. For Ones the 'best' is the idea supported by the ablest and most balanced people, whether or not they form a majority. They like the energy of team competition, but dislike being forced to accept error or to be led into error by others. Rigidity or detours are what they fear most.

The fertile Ones have a slightly different spin on their alliances with the community's 'best', as they will take into account the majority verdict. They like to help, creatively, in bringing the 'best' out into the open. They like to be in touch with the latest craze, fashion and argument. They look up to the creators and producers of the latest things in culture, and love to frequent places on the cutting edge. They are interested in the intellectual currents of fashion but don't create their identity out of them. They like to partner themselves with the wise and the long-term 'seers' of our culture and to prepare for the future. They don't like to put themselves out on a limb when they experiment with different lifestyles, and fear being isolated when styles change.

Ones are interested in prices rather than money itself. They may be careful spenders but they are not accumulators or gamblers. They will shift resources from one place to another to gain advantages, but they do not take risks about which they have little information. They will spend on their friends and on their team but do not like to waste money on things without purpose. For their spending, they like to see 'enhancements' and improvements both to things and to people.

For Ones, their best partners are also their friends and allies who will, however far apart in background and outlook, gradually come closer and closer to match them over time and as they resolve towards 5, where they will accept the standing in life that their 'progression' has brought them.
